FAT TUESDAY

growing up, we celebrated mardi gras every year. I had no idea this was a southern thing until I moved out of the south. by a happy coincidence, I just happened to be home during this year's festivities. though I'm more than a little bummed I missed the parade. if you're not all that familiar with mardi gras (fat tuesday),

every year while we were living in idaho, I would go store to store looking for little plastic babies to stick in my king cake and every year I would come back empty handed. plus, the sales clerks always looked at me like I needed to be committed. they had no idea what a king cake was...a round doughnut of deliciousness. except it is not a doughnut at all; I don't know why I wrote that. they are like a cinnamon roll and a bear claw fell into the deepest love, made a baby, and it was the king of all cakes. I apologize. that was a little dramatic.
we picked ours up in what is probably the (second) cutest neighborhood in pensacola--east hill--at j's bakery. if you ever visit, you have to stop and get a bear claw. right next door, there is a little place called city grocery and they make the most amazing grilled cheese you will ever have. seriously life changing.

later, we went and stalked all of the mardi gras decorations. I was a little obsessed since I haven't had a real mardi gras since I went to college. thank goodness my mom is so patient because we drove all over the place.

and these two don't really have anything to do with mardi gras, but I found them downtown and I couldn't resist:

laissez bon temps rouler
love, arielle

p.s. this year, I got the baby on my first piece. which guarantees me a year of prosperity, right?
