SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE

well this is awkward. it's been almost four months since I last watered my little patch of the internet. I'm not really sure what it was that spurred my impromptu hiatus. I promise it wasn't premeditated. maybe I just needed a walkabout of sorts or maybe I just got caught up in everything else life and the caribbean have to offer (yup, we're still here).

bygones? good. 'cause four months of lazy netflix nights has sort of piled on a crazy amount of pictures that need editing and words that need typing. and I figured a little instagram catching up was just the ticket. what do you say?

one :: that's right, we spent a night and a day in nyc and it was every bit as busy as everyone said. weirdly enough, everywhere we went people just stared (kind of rudely and openly) at mitch. maybe because he's so tall? but he's not like nba/circus tall so I don't even know what that was about. maybe it's because he's so handsome. if so, I don't blame them one bit.

two :: a kiss at the top of the empire state building. every meg ryan fan's dream, amiright? dark and windy isn't really the best recipe for pictures but it sure was pretty. and pricey. who knew it was so expensive to ride an elevator up 80-something stories.

three :: central park in the morning--birds chirping, dogs running amuck, cherry blossoms in full bloom, and two very lost wanderers eating street bagels and wearing their weight in backpacks. I don't know about you, but that's the essence of the perfect romantic morning right there.

four :: bikeriding 'round central park. that really is the way to see it, too, because it's so massive that there's no way you would get to see everything without a couple wheels and pedals beneath you. after a very traumatic mountain biking experience I was a little insecure with my bikeriding skills, but riding on nicely paved roads on a gorgeous morning is a horse of a different color.

five :: our first experience at gray's papaya, which I would recommend to anyone! seriously. unless you're into anything organic or vegan or...healthy. because it's just hot dogs. really good, really inexpensive hot dogs. but hot dogs and slushes nonetheless.

six :: after iphone declared we had walked more than 19000 steps, we felt that a mango break in sheep's meadow was in order. this was after the harrowing journey up to gray's papaya and after all the hot dogs, I felt a touch of scurvy coming on so...

seven :: the view from global first. I couldn't believe that we got to first class to and from europe, but it was definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime fancy experiences. there's a seven course meal and turndown service. I don't use this word lightly, but it totally fits here--epic.

eight :: our first view of geneva. bleary-eyed, we photographed that city till it's smile was stiff. not really, but you get it.

nine :: the view from our hotel in lucerne. we actually got this hotel for a steal because it was the 'deal of the day' or whatever on travelocity or some nonsense and we couldn't have lucked out more. the view, the beds, the food, everything could not have been more perfect.

ten :: mitch and I being all goofy on chapel bridge. they rebuilt it, don't you know?

eleven :: bretzel sandwiches. because no german-influenced town would use buns. but if they did, their buns would be a hundred times better than our buns. food is just better over there.

twelve :: after an extensive and time-consuming trek for a pair of trainers (I forgot mine like a dummy), I finally got my highly anticipated run alongside lake lucerne and it was every bit as breathless as I imagined it would be. and I'm not referring to my lungs.

thirteen :: vegan cupcakes by chapel bridge--our post run snack.

fourteen :: just one tiny view from lucerne's farmer's market. and can I just say? I don't think I've ever seen anyplace so wonderful. they had every fruit, vegetable, flower, cheese, bread, random house plant that you could ever imagine and we almost missed our train to milan because mitch couldn't pull me away.

fifteen :: mitch overlooking slovenia. a place he still refers to as 'home' after living around there for two years.

sixteen :: slunj (pronounced like sloon). just a little town built on a waterfall full of orangina. we had been taking to many pictures that my smile was all cramped up and when mitch suggested that I reset it, this ended up in our camera roll.

seventeen :: plitvicka jezera. a croatian national park totally devoted to waterfalls and ferry rides and since we are huge fans of both, it was the perfect way to spend a day.

eighteen :: the view from our hotel in motovun, croatia, which might be the most romantic place on earth. it's this tiny little town located at the top of a mountain with nothing but a couple of restaurants and a little church. everywhere you look is surrounded by lush, green vineyards and private gardens.

nineteen :: one of the two restaurants in motovun and it looked like it jumped right out of a harry potter novel and into our vacation.

twenty :: the view from hotel number two in motovun. it's amazing how high up that little town is. you can't even see the vineyards below because of hanging fog.

twenty-one :: back in america! exhausted. and blurry. iphone must have been exhausted, too.

twenty-two :: throwing it back to another view running along the lake in lucerne.

twenty-three :: and a few days later, it's back to reality. we still kind of laugh about how our everyday is some people's idea of a vacation.

twenty-four :: another throwback. this time to croatia. there, all of the porches were covered by these gorgeous branches. it wasn't until after I got home that I realized that that is what wisteria looks like. I'm thinking that's enough shelter for me.

twenty-five :: another throwback (I'm obnoxious) to the farmer's market in lucerne. I'm pretty sure that's what 'self-actualized' looks like.

twenty-six :: my mother's day flowers. they're not easy to find on this island those were brought here all the way from holland.

twenty-seven :: a pre-flight trip to the beach before jumping on a jetplane to my big brother's wedding. that little speck? yeah, that's mitch.

twenty-eight :: my nieces equal two now! and both are so gorgeous!

twenty-nine :: the view from my run 'round my sister's neck of the woods. it was the perfect rainy day and I wanted to take it all in.

thirty (this is a long list, my apologies) :: some onlookers on my run the day after. silly busy-body cows.

thirty-one :: because aren't peonies everyone's favorite flower right about now? I know I'm on that bandwagon. these in particular smelled divine. or if you're my five-year-old niece, they smell like cotton candy.

thirty-two :: the provo temple by morning light. it's so rare we get back there living where we live but it's such a treat when we do.

thirty-three :: my little angel of a niece. she was seriously the most helpful five-year old you ever saw at a wedding. she was helping take care of all the younger kids and later, at the reception, she even refilled everyone's glasses and let me wear her 'sofia the first' amulet. I don't think kids get any sweeter than that.

thirty-four :: me and my long lost best friend. she's one of those that no matter how long you've been apart or how long you go without talking, you can always pick up right where you left off. she is a seriously amazing girl, too. it's so nice having friends that make you want to be better than you are.

thirty-five (almost through now) :: my latest work of art. all of the wives at the med school got together for a night of bird family portrait capturing and honestly, mine looks nothing like it should. the background was supposed to be a gradient, but I heard the word 'smear' and just sort of ran with it. however, painting these birds was oddly therapeutic and I think I'm going to add painting (albeit poorly) to my life here pretty soon.

this is pretty much the last month and a half in a nutshell, but I have every intention of hashing out our europe adventure city by city here in the next couple of weeks. unless, of course, I can't find you or if I forget. shrek 2 anyone? just me? alrighty then.

I hope you get to skip your case of the mondays this week and have an awesome day. here's to catching up! leave it in the comments if you fancy.

love, arielle
