FARMER'S MARKET STYLE

one of my most very favorite things about summer is the local community farmer's market. one where local producers remember you from week to week and there's no shortage of lemonade being sold in mason jars. it has also been one of the things I've missed most about living on this exotic, but mostly barren, caribbean island. and so I've been trying to find ways to infuse the essence of farmer's market saturdays into my day to day. I'll buy the more expensive french carrots just because they still have the dirt on them and I own my own little mason jar for afternoon lemonade hankerings and I've been dressing like I'm constantly on my way to the market. not that there is any one farmer's market uniform, but there's something about sundresses and overalls that just carry heart notes of farmer's market, don't you think? as does everything else on this list. for some reason, I just feel like overalls paired with wellies means you should have garden dirt all over you and bushels of cherries in your arms. 

now, about penhaligon's iris prima perfume. before we left for the island, mitch bought me the massage of my life and the girl used this bergamot scented oil that smelled so good I was hesitant to shower it off come next morning. don't worry, I did, but I've been looking for the most perfect bergamot perfume since and this one is a total winner. definitely give it a spritz the next time you're at the counter!

and on a total side note, I'm having the hardest time picking out a pair of wellies. I want the classic shape and a nice neutral color that will go with anything. any suggestions??

PINNING || FALL TRENDS I LOVE

so far, autumn has brought us so many wonderful things. it's brought later mornings and chillier evenings. it's brought corn mazes and walks through the pumpkin patch. it's brought plaid blanket scarves, oversized sweaters, faux-leather everything, and boots. lots of boots. being the pinterest junkie that I am, I pretty much obsess over all of this year's favorite fall trends. as a child who grew up in the nineties, I swore I would never go back there, which is incredibly tough to do when 'there' feels a little like home. a home chalk full of destroyed denim, birkenstocks, and too-long sleeves. probably the best and biggest difference is that I have a greater understanding of which trends to follow and which trends to pass up. or at least, I hope I do. I love all of the classic renditions of these nineties favorites. I seriously want to buy a croissant for whoever thought that up. so cheers to them. cheers to the nineties. and cheers to fall. we still get a whole month before stringing up some twinkle lights and calling it winter.

I know my daily uniform is terribly unimaginative. it pretty much consists of washed out denim and my favorite birks. you know what they say :: when in paradise...

and it's already wednesday!? it's crazy how that happens. yesterday, I woke up and it felt like friday. when I found out it was only tuesday, I was a little disappointed. now today, I wake up and remember that it's wednesday and I can scarcely believe it! regardless, I really hope your weeks are going well. I will be spending my whole day waiting for a care package from my mom ( because that's where my candy corn is ) and doing absolutely nothing. sounds like some sort of wonderful, doesn't it? take care, everyone.

EMBRACING THE BASICS

before mastering that concerto on the pianoforte or winning that crucial game of volleyball, we all had teachers who stressed the basics. and I dare say, clothing isn't all that different. however, contrary to how we felt during those hours upon hours of piano practicing, these basics are anything but boring. this white-shirt-and-jeans ensemble is a fun, upscale rendition of the old classic. those current elliott stiletto skinnies are so comfortable and versatile and I've pretty much been rocking them in some way everyday since they showed up in my mailbox. and these steve madden stilettos are a definite must this year. both were at the top of my 'most wanted' list. and if you've looked back in my archives, then you've probably noticed an oversized white button-up ( or two ) lingering on some inspiration board or another. I grabbed mine in three sizes up and this one is just light-weight enough to rock in the caribbean. 

as you can probably tell, my messy hair challenge is nothing short of, well, messy. as healthy and low-maintenance as my hair is this summer, I will definitely revere the day I can take my curling iron to these unruly locks once again. how far away is labor day?

we all go through phases. whether it's that favorite food that you can't get enough of until that day you buy a whole pack  and later forget about it in the back of the fridge. or that favorite author you stalk the interwebs for any and all short stories she might have written and one month later, they're nothing more than a plate full of cookies in your cache. and then there are those phases you keep coming back to. pinterest is one of those latter phases. it's in good company right there next to nutella. I'll have months where I diligently pin every night before bed so as to wind down and then undergo weeks without it. this week has not been one of those weeks. this week, I've been going pin crazy and have found so many lovely outfits and views and home decor ::

002 :: the cutest little one wearing the cutest little dress. I'm actually wondering if it can me made in my size?! 

003 :: sprinkle soiree. if you follow me on insta, then you probably already know I am a huge fan of sprinkles. I can only imagine the gloriousness of having a whole party devoted to those little confectionary pieces of heaven. am I too old for a sprinkle-themed birthday party?

004 :: this indiana jones hat. I love the wide-but-not-too-wide brim. just enough to be noticeable. and I can only imagine all of the adventures wearing a hat like this ensues. the exact version is only available in black, but I love the oh-so-similar brown one here.

005 :: these milkmaiden braids. if a hairstyle could embody girly and rural at the same time, this would be the one. you can find a great tutorial here.

006 :: roses in newspaper. there is nothing quite like a plain-jane newspaper to bring out the natural beauty of a soft, pink rose. 

007 :: woolen blankets hanging on a line by the sea. the beautiful styling of this picture makes for the most perfect imagery. 

008 :: white lace with tassels. at first, I wasn't sure where the tassel train was going, but as of now, I really don't care. I am more than willing to hop on. love this and this and this, too.

009 :: these diy shopping bags. so idyllic stuffed with nutrients whilst walking around your local farmer's market.

010 :: tattered jeans with pointed sling-backs. a beautiful combination of masculine and feminine. both pieces are so versatile, that they would mingle well with anyone's existing wardrobe, don't you think? pick up those flats here. and I love these jeans.

011 :: lucite chairs. I don't think I could ever convince mitch to let me set these up at the dining room table in our dream home, but I do love the sleek and modern aesthetic of lucite and might just have to sneak them into less inhabited spaces where he might not notice ;)

012 :: this tartan cardinal print skirt. I could not find where this beautiful work of art was from ( #tumblrproblems ). so if someone could enlighten me, I would be forever grateful. see some other printed skirts I love here ::

013 :: this floral fifties dress. the romantic in me just can't let this one go. and it's an etsy find! I do so love giving money to small business.

014 :: this vintage kitchen sink. the white is right up my alley and I love how it isn't set into the countertop. best with beautiful fresh blooms nearby, of course.

015 :: blue and green dotted dress. so laid back and comfortable and perfect for these warm summer evenings.

016 :: this masculine meets feminine design scheme. mitch even agreed to it! I love how this manly leather chair complements the girly paned windows and crown moulding. and of course, it's still nice and neutral.

017 :: summer hammock diy. as the days get warmer, the afternoons only get lazier. I am thinking that's a sign it is hammock season.

018 :: let yourself be flawed. a beautiful reminder to calm down during our quest for perfection.

WEAR WISHING || A SERIOUS CASE OF THE BLUES

it seems as though every time I visit the northern american continent, I clear off one wishlist simply to start another. so here it goes. my picks right now are, admittedly, heavily influenced by the fact that the fourth of july is right around the corner. and I'm not sure if it's the prospect of watching fireworks (via facetime) and beachside bbqs and blueberry pie, but I am really feeling the blues. in a good way. take a peek...

001 :: essie--boucer its me. such a striking, pronounced hue of blue and well-fitting for summertime. among my friends and family, I refer to this shade as "santorini blue," but I'm not sure if that is what it's really called or if it just reminds me of those colored domes so strongly associated with beautiful greece. you get the idea, nonetheless.

002 :: west elm--herringbone mercury votive. by now, surely you know my affinity for a candle or two (or twenty) burning in the home to give it that perfect ambiance whatever the season. and following suit, I can't wait to lay my hands on this gorgeous candle holder. I can only imagine how beautiful it will be to see candlelight gleaming through its not-quite-opaque surface.

003 :: not quite a slip dress. I love the freespiritedness of this fun, loose-fitting dress. maybe paired with a loose cardigan, some fun sandals, and messy hair.  check out asos for so many more summer appropriate dresses.

004 :: birkenstock--'mayari' sandal. I love birkenstocks, but having incredibly narrow feet makes wearing the classic arizona (which I love) look like I'm a five-year-old trying on my mother's shoes. however, this more feminine option still has that birkenstock air with maybe a little less wiggle room. find them online only at nordstrom.

005 :: lulu & georgia--ice cream ring holder. what a fun and easy way to decorate summer while keeping life still so entirely functional?! lulu & georgia always has something fun up their sleeves.

006 :: anthropologie--lacey inset apron. I've decided I need a new apron. it was most likely because I was thinking about pie. pie always makes me want to look, act, and dress the role of the domestic goddess.

007 :: baublebar--gold iced lariat pendant. you can never go wrong with something long, gold, and versatile. baublebar pretty much has something for everyone.

008 :: ray-ban--flash clubmaster. these are at the top of my wishlist! I love that tortoise shell encasing those bright teal, polarized lenses. plus, you can never have too many pair of sunnies. found via nordstrom.

009 :: williams sonoma--mini ruffled pie dish. I've already mentioned pie twice, haven't I? well, it is that time of year. williams sonoma is one of those dreamy stores that mitch and I can both get lost in for hours. so it's no surprise that they had the most perfect and simple pie plate(s) for our little two-person household. now, if only I could find the most perfect apron...oh wait ;)

010 :: topshop--cut out slippers. mitch has been encouraging me to purchase a new pair of flats for quite some time now. perhaps it's because I am pretty pathetic after wearing heels for longer than four hours and flip flops, although useful and convenient, never seem to look as polished as a real shoe. this pair of flats from topshop fills both of my requirements :: convenient and polished.

I know that this post is coming to you a little late in the day, but after reuniting with the mister just yesterday afternoon, I couldn't bring myself to neglect him whilst conjuring up a blog post at the computer. my first day back on the island has consisted of catching up on some much needed sleep, grocery shopping (I really can't figure out what mitch has been eating for two weeks), reading my favorite blogs, and indulging in a little bit of sun. plus, I can hardly contain my excitement for the fourth of july! do any of you have special plans?

STAND BY YOUR MEN THIS FATHER'S DAY

father's day is one of those holidays where you can buy your guy anything you want. for christmas and for birthdays, they get a say. but not father's day. you get them the gift you are wanting to give them. even though mitch and I are still without children, we still honor each other in the age-old tradition of father's day. you know, since he's the father of my future children. and I get my turn at mother's day. but this post is about those amazing and wonderful men in our lives--husbands, brothers, fathers, grandfathers. they are all fathers and future fathers, so why not celebrate them all? I am so grateful for the many men in my life. my brother for continually being an awesome bro and having my back even when I don't deserve it. my dad for teaching me so many valuable lessons and for the countless sacrifices he's made for me over the years. my father-in-law for his sense of humor and wise understanding. my grandfather-in-law for his example of hard work, dedication, and spirituality. and of course, my amazing husband for his unwavering love, his unconditional kindness, and his playful disposition. these men are so important to me, just as I'm sure your circle of men are equally as important to you. so let's salute them this father's day. and maybe give a gift or two...

002 :: a shaving kit. I've been urging mitch to purchase one ever since we saw the last james bond movie. so elegant.

003 :: a new pair of board shorts this swim season. I am loving everything nautical this summer, and these trunks are no exception.

004 :: a sweet pair of kicks. this pair goes great with jeans. a rare quality, I've found.

005 :: a checked dress shirt. I'm really digging fun-colored checks and stripes this summer. who says traditional can't be fun?

006 :: a classic belt. no man can have enough of these. and no man can ever remember to pack one whilst traveling, either.

007 :: dog cuff links. although we appreciate all of god's critters, we are one big family of dog people. enough said.

008 :: bvlgari man. this is my absolute favorite fragrance for mitch.

009 :: this rag&bone backpack. a definite splurge item. but this retro style has me weak in the knees.

010 :: eccentric socks. these are for that guy who always mixes it up. you know who I'm talking about.

011 :: an original tie. in a world where men where white shirts and slacks, this really is their only outlet for individuality. get the guy a new tie.

012 :: this mountain hardware windbreaker. for those of us who would like to think of ourselves as outdoorsy, this windbreaker would simply seal the deal. and you can never go wrong with mountain hardware.

013 :: this rag&bone wallet. again, a definite splurge.

014 :: lstn headphones. just because your man doesn't want background noise to his background music, doesn't mean he doesn't want to do it in style (too many negatives?).

015 :: a quirky mug. one that reminds him just how lucky he really is ;)

016 :: wingtipped shoes. hashtag new-obsession. so classic in such an understated way.

PINS + UPDATES || SUMMER TRENDING

so far, june has brought all of the summer essentials. bright, sunny days. lazy afternoons. fresh and fruity lemonades. lots of event and holiday planning. and so many amazing trends to try. I don't know about you, but I've been exhausting all of the white in my wardrobe (I never can seem to get enough) and am still searching for the most perfect pair of slouchy jeans. any suggestions? this week's pinboard was a piece of cake as I have been going a little pin-crazy. from the sweets that I am trying so desperately to steer clear of to the cutest and (most stylish) little girls I've ever seen to funny harry potter puns, I'm borderline obsessed and will be giving myself a pinterest time-out just as soon as this little post is on its way. well, I'm considering it.

001 :: a woven poncho. these always take me back to jessica simpson in newlyweds circa 2003. does anyone else recall this monumental point in history? call me crazy, but I just cannot get enough of this look right now. so flowy and bohemian, yet still so comfortable and ideal for summer nights by the bonfire whilst charring marshmallows. it's also the perfect piece for transitioning from beach to brunch to market. it even opens in the front. I'm not quite sure you can ask an article of clothing for much more. you can find this gem here.

002 :: boho chic smocking. the oldest trend among babies' christening gowns and little girls' gingham jumpers is now among the newest trends for this year's summer wardrobe. not only is this dress the most flattering shade of red, but it is so playful and girly and looks like it would hold up against this startling june heat. it's available at asos!

003 :: distressed skinnies w/ a black sandal. this might be a new trend this summer, but it is still everywhere. and for good reason! it's so classic in such an understated and laid-back way. these are my favorite jeans to style this look because you don't have to cuff them if you're not feeling it, but they will break the bank so you can see similar here. a great look paired with these sandals (they're even on sale) or you can try these for a bolder look.

004 :: white on white. nothing exclaims, 'summer has officially started!' like white. white pants. white shoes. white everything. and I feel like my life just gets a lot easier and a little fresher when I wear clean white linens paired with a fresh white shirt or sweater. even if it makes me more than a little nervous when going out to lunch.

005 :: the perfect fedora. an obvious accessory for that beach day you've been longing for or for that annual trip to the lake with family and friends. I love it with both messy waves and a side fishtail (my current go-to hairstyle for a late start). I am currently craving this one, though I also like this one and this one and this one.

006 :: a crisp, white button-down. I'm pretty sure this is a must-have for everyone all year round. this is something that just goes with everything, isn't it? but this summer, go a size up so that it hangs a little looser making it an ideal swim cover-up or the classic top to tuck in. check out this one or this one or this one.

007 :: slouchy jeans w/ this a-line top. the girl in the photo bought her slouchy boyfriend jeans from pull&bear, a company based in the uk. but these and these caught my eye whilst perusing. do you have a favorite boyfriend jean? if so, let me know in the comments below. I'm still on the prowl for a pair. there's a very similar version of the top pictured, here.

008 :: raincoats with sandals. growing up in northern florida, you could count on at least one torrential rain shower a day. it would last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and so it was always a relief to have a raincoat or an umbrella on hand. this raincoat is adorable and it's from this charming little store in portland, bridge&burn. and although sandals might not be your first choice on a rainy day, that shouldn't stop you from breaking them out a couple of times a week. summer is too short to think about what is considered sensible. plus, I love the way they contradict this coat. in my search, I fell in love with these and these.

009 :: baseball hats and ray-bans. I am so excited baseball hats are back! some people have the perfect shaped head for headbands and scarves. not me. I have the perfect shaped head for a baseball hat. and with baseball season in full swing, it seems appropriate that they are back this summer. these polarized ray-bans are a catch, as well. I never understood the advantage of a polarized lens until just the other day when I tried on mitch's glasses. oh my, they make such a huge difference! I don't think I'll ever go back to your run-of-the-mill tinted lens again. I love this style a lot, but these are great, too.

in truth, there are so many great trends going on right now, and these are merely a few. isn't it fun to go out and give them  all a go? in other news, today we have a little poolside brunch planned along with some grocery shopping and maybe making doughnuts. I've also been praying it will rain. this paradise needs to cool down a bit. I hope all of you have a fantastic wednesday! as always, thank you for reading!

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA

upon first moving to the island, I was captivated by the mall down the street from where we live. mostly because of the word 'mall' and partially because they have a soft pretzel stand. it was then that I came across the store, opera. I swooned over all of their couture collections, which consist of dvf, ted baker, bcbg, the lovely tory burch, and many, many more. when I first contacted opera about maybe collaborating, I had no idea how fun they would be to work with. the girls are so inspiring and have such amazing tastes. they do the shopping with you suggesting things that you may not have considered before, but certainly should have! this white dress is elegant with a bit of a flirty edge and can be worn to dinner or drinks (if you're into that sort of thing). perfect for a night out in the caribbean. and I don't think I can say enough about this bag. you hold something like this, and you just know that it is more than a utilitarian case for holding your phone or your favorite lipstick. you hold it and you know that it is a work of art. feel free to drop by the luxury fashion show this saturday featuring many of opera's haute collections. you can find more information here.

messing around on the internets, I've come across so many beautiful island getaways. and beautiful outfits, too. out of habit, I started getting really jealous. that was until I realized that I live in one big island getaway! and even though I don't always put enormous amounts of care and effort into my outfits, that doesn't stop me from hours of perusing nordstrom's online store (it's a really good thing they don't ship here). here, I've favorited some items. some are affordable. others...not so much. but here's dreaming.

001 :: wayward stripe scarf. I feel like a beach day with friends or a relaxing day at the pool is typically kicked off with a delicious brunch. and what better way to dress up a cover up than a beautiful summer scarf? I am of the firm belief that a scarf (and a messy bun) is the perfect aid when going tableside to poolside without a changing room. and I am still pretty head-over-heels for this minty color. 

002 :: mesh tote. browsing and browsing through endless tote bag possibilities, I stumbled upon this gem. I don't know who thought up a leather beach bag, but that just doesn't seem practical to me. this mesh option is waterproof and will pack nicely in your suitcase full of all sorts of other beautiful things...

003 :: frends taylor headphones. I see the rose gold version everywhere, but am dying to get my hands on this floral print. definitely on my wish list.

004 :: tory burch 'margherita' cover up. if you've been reading here long, you know by now that I love almost all of the designs by tory burch. this charming little cover up is no exception. it is the perfect mix of bohemian and dainty and I just can't say 'no' to that combination.

005 :: tory burch silicone case. you can never have too many phone cases, and not only is this one easily washable, but it is also made by tory burch ;)

006 :: the xx coexist. my husband I love the xx and I can't think of a more chill or relaxing soundtrack to play to my poolside nap. plus, imagine blasting them through those previously mentioned adorable headphones. perfection.

007 :: the fault in our stars. this book has been referred to me time and time again and has amazing reviews. I am seriously feeling the pressure to start and finish it before the movie comes out.

008 :: colorful one-piece. this fun, aztec printed one piece by mara hoffman really is a work of art. and all of those colors make it easy finding matching cover-ups. so many color pallets to play with.

009 :: straw hat. I'm a sucker for a big sun hat. with its downward facing brim, this one in particular reminds me of the sun hat audrey hepburn would have chosen had she chosen one for this little collection. 

010 :: prada sunglasses. if you're going to read, you need to protect those eyes. after all, you only get one pair. it's a really good thing that isn't the case with sunglasses. I am currently loving this shape right now! it still has that cat-eye air without being all buggy.

011 :: sandals. the perfect pair of sandals is hard to come by... they need to slip on. they need to stay clean. they need to go with just about everything. and they need to dress up for brunch. ergo, this sandal. I especially love the metallic strap here.

I hope we are all finding ourselves in warmer weather and days full of french toast at 11 am. and can you even believe it's wednesday? crazy!

SOFT PALLET

I am well aware that neons are making a comeback. but as I went to pull on a brightly colored blue cardi, I paused. it just didn't feel right for this charming little neighborhood. when I was young, I always pictured myself moving back home and setting up fort in one of these adorable little town homes. of course, life doesn't always work out the way we plan. but that didn't stop me from wandering the neighborhood pretending that I lived in the house just around the corner. as for the outfit...the j.crew factory store is sort of my arsenal for dressing impeccably on a medical student's budget. the blush pink cardigan, though not made by j.crew, speaks femininity. the lace frock, a bit of whimsy. and the gold heel on the shoe, a bit of flare. all while the soft pallet conveys elegance in a way that neons just can't express.
